Youth culture typically refers to a ways immature population (teen & adolescent) differentiate themselves from either the general culture of their community. The youth subculture as such is recent, thought to start around a mid-20th century, that is, after World War II, due to the economic, political, and training changes. It was occasionally the feature of Western civilization.

Youth culture, can come out rebellious but may centre in conformity to an "in-group" when youth occurs as period of identity formation (see Erik Erikson's stages of psychosocial development).

A term "teenager" is about same to adolescent. A word "teenager" or even "teen" appeared in the mid-20th century, a teenager occurs as individual aged thirteen to nineteen.

USA
Western youth culture is to the few extent a creation of the media and marketing efforts. MTV is seen as a youth culture trendsetter.

There are the total of stereotypes of American youth, on to dress, music, relationships & attitudes to life. Numbers of one stereotypes come pejorative and inaccurate.

Dyslogistic stereotypes include: cliques and creation of out-groups dislike of school. glorification of rebellious or "bad" behaviour relating to sexual activity, drug utilise, etc. use of slang and profanity cynicism, capriciousness or changeability

Ironically what is 'cool' is non considered cool when soon when it goes mainstream. An case of this is the iPod - and its relationship to the iGeneration [http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,65278,00.html].
